While it is no doubt that the industry is mainly dominated by 3rd and 4th generation groups today, there are still some older groups whose comeback has garnered both commercial and critical success and exposed a lot of new fans to their music and giving old fans the refreshing taste of their sound. With groups like 2AM, 2PM, SUPER JUNIOR, BIGBANG, Highlight, etc all making a successful comeback in the last 2 years, this shows that there is a vivid interest in older generation groups and fans are ready to listen to the sound of the pioneers of the Hallyu wave of K-Pop. With hopes of them joining the list of successful comebacks, here are some of the older male K-Pop groups we would love to see make a comeback in 2023.
1. SHINee
SHINee has been one of the most indomitable forces in K-Pop since their debut. With an exceptional discography filled with hits records, amazing and jaw-dropping stage performances, and a plethora of awards and achievements, in any list of the most successful K-Pop groups, there is no doubt that SHINee ranks high on it. Since their last comeback in 2021, the members of the group have been actively promoting their solo works which have not just shown their individual colors but also gained them reverence as soloists in the industry. However, by 2023, the final member and maknae TaeMin will be discharged from the military and after a much-deserved rest, we do hope to get news of a possible comeback. News that will undoubtedly be thrilling to many fans who are patiently waiting for the comeback of SHINee as a group.
2. TVXQ
TVXQ are one of the most popular groups from the 2nd generation who also contributed greatly towards the Hallyu wave of K-Pop. The breakthrough artist in K-Pop, TVXQ led K-Pop into the global market with their outstanding music and exceptional performances. The idols’ idols, till date, TVXQ are still revered as one of the true kings of K-Pop whose invaluable talents and works have served as one of the foundations of the industry. And although in the last 2 years, the members have been promoting as soloists, with their incredible and viral performances at SMTOWN LIVE, fans have a reignited hope of the group making a possible comeback as a unit once again, and in 2023, we hope they fulfill our wishes and thrill us all with their melodious vocals and unique sound once again.
3. BIGBANG
BIGBANG are often regarded as the GOAT of K-Pop for due reasons. They have been one of the most influential idol groups since that debut, whose talents still gain global reverence and admiration today. With incredible record sales, sold-out concerts, a discography of charting-topping hits, and perhaps rooms filled with record-breaking awards and achievements, even after years 16 years since their debut, BIGBANG continues to maintain their standings as one of the most popular groups today. And although they made yet another successful comeback with their song ‘Still Life’, in 2023, we greedily want a full-length album from the group. We have been starved of this since 2018 and we want our fill!
4. INFINITE
INFINITE might be on an indefinite hiatus for a while now but by 2023, we hope they all dust their studio equipment, clear their vocal chords, and deliver the amazing quality of songs they are well known for. With all the members completing their military enlistment and now promoting as solo acts, it is clear that their passion for music still burns brightly, and having thrilled fans with many of their hit songs in the past, we would love to see and hear their performances and music as a group once again.
5. TEEN TOP
TEEN TOP were one of the fast-rising groups of the 2nd generation. Known for their unique concepts and style of music, TEEN TOP were a refreshing burst of energy and excitement in the early 2010s. With each comeback and performance, they shocked and delighted fans with their impressive live vocals and amazing yet so intense choreography. And although in the later years of their careers they were faced with a popularity decline due to a change in sound, amongst other reasons, we would like to see them make another comeback in 2023 as with anything, there is now a larger market of K-Pop fans, with diverse taste in sounds and styles of music.
6. U-KISS
When we describe an idol group with refreshing and unique styles, U-KISS were one of the idol groups who are befitting of that description. U-KISS are one of the older groups with a long list of songs that if released today, would still be chart-topping successes and viral sensations. Frankly, the group made some of the best songs with deep and resounding messages that were beautifully conveyed with their amazing vocals, and with their exciting stage performances, U-KISS were truly a one-of-a-kind force to be reckoned with. And although some of the members have departed the group, it won’t be an unwelcomed event if all the members reunite and create a special album for fans in 2023.
