Kpopmap had the delight of chatting with Lee ChaeYeon about her newest album, music video, and her journey as a solo artist! She also had a special message for her fans and all Kpopmap readers, which you’ll find at the end of the interview. Hello, Lee ChaeYeon! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down and talk with Kpopmap and its readers. We hope that you enjoy answering these questions and revealing more about yourself to your fans! To start things off, we want to ask you how are you feeling these days now that your first mini album has been released? It’s been a solo debut album that we’ve waited a long time to release, so it’s that much more precious and meaningful to me. I prepared a lot for this because I wanted to show everyone my growth as an artist during the long time we’ve been apart. I was very nervous and anxious, but while preparing I missed all of you so much, as well as being on the stage, so since I came back, I’ve been very happy. Your new music video for the song ‘HUSH RUSH’ has a perfect balance of being dark and cute. Is there a particular message that you wanted to convey to people who watched it? The music video is about a vampire who is trapped in an ancient castle for 300 years. The vampire wakes up and takes her first step into the world, which is thrilling and shown in a cute way. It’s a storyline about a vampire, but it is also about me as Lee ChaeYeon, so I hope that you enjoy watching it. Also, I wanted to show that the 324 year old vampire ChaeYeon is not scary, but is a quirky and lovable character. Although this is your first mini album, are there any other concepts or styles you hope to explore in the future? There are so many concepts that I want to try, but out of those, I want to try a concept that is the complete opposite vibe of my personality, which is the “bad girl” concept! (smiles) I want to transform into this “bad girl concept” that doesn’t even smile, and a very charismatic and fatal side with my charm. You must be very busy these days, especially with your solo debut, but what do you like to do most to unwind and relax at the end of the day? When my schedule is done for the day, I love taking a nice hot shower. The warmth of the water takes away my stress and gives me comfort after the hard work that I put into that day. And then when I wear my compression stockings to relax my tired legs, my routine is complete. Is there a particular line or quote off your album that you think best exemplifies yourself as an artist and person? In my title song ‘HUSH RUSH,’ there is a line that says “The unstoppable trembling makes me dance.” This part represents my heart the best. I’m always nervous singing and dancing on stage in front of my fans, but because of that nervousness, I can continue to move forward. How are your siblings being supportive in your solo debut? They monitor my activities every day and give me lots of attention! They focus on my activities like it is their own work, so I feel very reassured. They also always send me messages of support, so it always helps give me confidence when I’m working. What are your concerns being a solo artist, and what are you looking forward to most? I think a lot about what kind of sides I want to show as a solo artist and what expectations I can instill. I’m also always thinking about what kind of various charms I can show when I perform on stage. But, I’m also excited about the kinds of characters and images I can draw out of myself. Seeing how I can discover new sides of myself that I didn’t know existed, really makes me happy. Have you leaned on anyone in particular for advice or comfort before the release of your newest album? Before releasing the album, I received a lot of support from Weki Meki’s YooJung sunbae and Red Velvet’s SeulGi sunbae. They were in a similar time, similar situation, so we were able to understand each other and talk about everything. In particular, they gave me advice based on their experiences, so it gave me lots of strength. What are you hoping your fans and new fans will learn about you as you embark on your solo career? As a result of my performance and in particular dance, we received a lot of love and recognition. For this album, I wanted to show more of my voice. I worked hard to make my voice sound more colorful and new, preparing songs that would highlight my vocals. I hope that you can feel the freshness of my voice and hope that you will like my new charm. And lastly, what is one thing you want to say to your loyal fans who have been by your side through it all? My fans are the reason why I live and breathe. I haven’t seen all of you in so long, but I want you to know that we are always connected, so I was able to gain strength. It will always be like that. I will always believe in that and work harder to move forward. I will always repay your love by showing good sides of myself. I love you!
