Adapted from a webtoon of the same name created by BamWoo, “Cherry Blossoms After Winter” tells the warm and heartening story of HaeBom (Ok JinWook of Super Five) and TaeSeong (Kang Hui), two young boys who grew up living under the same roof together coming to terms with their true feelings for each other. HaeBom is kind, empathetic yet unassuming whereas TaeSeong is assertive, popular and indifferent. However, their similarities are brought to light as they step into their own power and accept themselves through love. Spoiler Alert! The latest episode of “Cherry Blossoms After Winter” marks a pivotal point in HaeBom and TaeSeong’s relationship. What has been up in the air transforms into grounded certainty and feelings of deep affection in the present win over the anxiety about consequences in the future. After a night of drinking their worries away and cuddling in each other’s arms, HaeBom comes down with alcohol-induced amnesia, not quite remembering the night before or how it affected his dynamic with TaeSeong. While his memory might be hazy, his feelings are clear as day. That night, HaeBeom dreams of a pleasantly surprising encounter with TaeSeong as they dive into a sweet and true kiss (which albeit goes a little farther than just that).
TaeSeong on the other hand, is struggling to figure out how, when or even if he should confess to HaeBom. After a mutual friend tries to set HaeBom up, TaeSeong attempts to deter him from going on the blind date. However, HaeBom insists that even if he did meet someone, they would never like him considering his situation. Unable to hold himself back any longer, TaeSeong abruptly admits that he likes him, which puts HaeBom in a tough spot as he grapples with his reservations. After a grueling night of fighting his feelings, which makes him physically sick, HaeBom asks TaeSeong why he likes him in a moment of decisive vulnerability. “I like you because it’s you”, says TaeSeong and our hearts melt into a puddle. It must have had an equally enchanting effect on HaeBom because by the end of the episode, he is sure of his heart and the fact that it belongs to TaeSeong. Setting the world aside, HaeBom falls into TaeSeong’s arms in tears and the two share a warm embrace. Thus begins the era of HaeBom and TaeSeong’s secret love life as they graduate high school and step into adulthood. Are you watching “Cherry Blossoms After Winter”?
