There are K-Pop fans across the globe who share the same passion. But on online platforms, it is hard to know about each other’ stories and K-Pop life. Even if we are in the same fandom, it is hard to get to know each other. So at Kpopmap, we started the Kpopmap Fan Interview Project to get to know more about K-Pop fans from different countries: more about their K-Pop life and tastes and to give them the opportunity to share with our readers about their favorite group(s) and bias. Michelle is the next fan to answer our questions. She is from the U.S. and is a fan of Hur HyunJun (former THE BOYZ’s Hwall). Check out how she entered the fandom, the songs and content she advises to new fans, and much more! Can you introduce yourself? Where are you from? Hello, my name is Michelle (she/her). I’m a 13 year old from Oakland. How and when did you enter the fandom? I entered Hur HyunJun’s fandom around June/July of 2022. I listened to his debut song “Baragi” and I fell in love with his voice. It was so calming to just hear him. I searched for edits from him on TikTok and I fell in love with him even more. He’s very funny, cute, hot, an amazing dancer, singer AND actor. I’ve known him since I saw him act in a BL drama called “Color Rush.” What are the reasons why you love your favorite artist? He’s just a very funny, loving guy in general and very creative with pottery. The way the lyrics of his songs just relate to me as if he knows what’s going on, everything about him is just so special that I love him for who he is. Can you recommend a title track and a B-side track for new fans? Since he doesn’t really have albums besides his 3 songs I do strongly recommend listening to all of his songs, they’re just very catchy and they have that vibe that you could just listen to it for hours and hours without getting bored. From ‘Baragi’, giving a soft vibe to ‘VO!D’, being an energetic song, and to ‘Let Me Drown’, giving a calm/sad feeling but in a good way. I love all of them equally.
Can you recommend a fancam, V Live, cover video, cover dance, or individual content video of your favorite artist to our readers? I would recommend watching THE BOYZ dance cover to ‘Cheer Up’ by TWICE, HyunJun focus. Even though HyunJun’s not in the group anymore, I still wanna point out the fact of how cute he is in the video. Like I said before, everything about him is perfect and he acted so cute in this cover I couldn’t stop admiring him. I especially love his smile. It could probably even light up my day just by looking at it. Can you share with us one of your favorite lyrics? One of my favorite lines from each of his songs (since he only has three) from the chorus in ‘Baragi’, “If you feel like I’m the one for you, then want me, I could give you all the world you deserve it.” It’s like he’s speaking right at me as if I was the only one he cared about. Also, from first verse of ‘VO!D’, “I thought even if we go back and forth you would wait for us, you would wait for me.” It gives me a vibe where you would go out of your way for someone but in return you would get nothing at all. Lastly, from the pre-chorus of ‘Let Me Drown’, “I wanna run away, get away from the pain that you’ve given me, don’t put me into ecstasy.” I feel like all of these songs just coordinate with each other like ‘Baragi’ being like in a relationship to being pushed away in ‘VO!D’ and finally pushing yourself away from a toxic relationship in ‘Let Me Drown’. I feel like many people people can relate to it. What drama genre do you want your favorite artist to appear in? What’s the reason? Since HyunJun is an actor, a genre I would like to see him in is either BL or horror. BL because I would absolutely LOVE to see him back in “Color Rush” since he wasn’t in the second season which was very upsetting, since the ending of “Color Rush 2” was a sort of cliffhanger (not trying to spoil for those who haven’t watched the show yet). I really do hope he will come back and reunite with Hong YooJun since I adored their chemistry. Meanwhile, horror, because I feel like HyunJun would be amazing in expressing different emotions since horror has to do with some action, just me thinking about him in a maybe fight scene would be really cool and I would love to see HyunJun with different people, how he acts with them (off-camera and on-camera). Which actors would you like your favorite artist to act with? What’s the reason? I would like to see HyunJun act with other idols in general but if I had to choose one I would say Kim TaeHyung (V) of BTS because both of them give this type of aura, that I feel like they would act perfect together. For me, it seems like if they were ever to be put in a drama together they would play the role as best friends in the show, moments of them laughing together would really put a smile on my face. Can you describe your favorite artist in only one word? If I could describe HyunJun in one word it would be : Perfect. Because he can act, sing, dance and has visuals, what can’t he do? If you can spend a day with your favorite artist, where will you go and what will you do? If I could spend a day with HyunJun, I would want to go to any park and just walk and talk about anything, sitting, eating, laughing with each other would just brighten my day. Please recommend your favorite selfie by your favorite artist. My favorite selfie of HyunJun would be one that he posted on June 19 on his Instagram. I am absolutely in love with his outfit even if I can’t see the whole thing and his smile is really really beautiful.

Something HyunJun and I have in common is probably the fact that his English name is Leo and my zodiac is a Leo. We sort of have the same MBTI his is ENFP, while mine is INFP. We also have the same favorite colors; black and white. What is your favorite artist’s influence on your daily life? HyunJun is really a big influence in my life even if I’ve only been a HURSHEY for a short time but either way, he influences my dancing. I’ve gotten more interested in it and he just gives me happiness everytime I see YouTube/TikTok videos of him, on his Instagram or simply listening to his music. Have you ever made a new friend because of K-Pop? I have made some friends because of K-Pop, not too many but at least 3-5. One of them was through Instagram, she noticed I liked BTS through my stories and messaged me, asking to be friends since we had similar interests. Another one (who is actually best friends at this moment) is during school, I don’t remember how but we were both into K-Dramas and we found out we were into K-Pop as well, and we got close ever since. I love her very much and I’m so so glad we got the chance to meet. Do you feel there are any misunderstandings, things that are not well known, or any prejudices about your favorite group from other fans (non-fans)? It seems like HyunJun has been getting a lot of hate for just one comment he made from his Instagram Live. Fans asked him if he was gay just because he was the main role in the K-Drama “Color Rush”. I’m thinking he got sick of those comments that he gave his answer and his answer was “I’m not gay. It’s just a drama character.” Some fans took it the wrong way, as if he was saying it in a rude way and started giving hate, which was the complete opposite. He just said what he had to say. I think fans being intrigued with his personal life is very rude as it’s really not our business. Michelle’s message to Hur HyunJun: HyunJun, thank you for everything. You helped me in many ways you probably don’t know about. Thank you for making me smile on my tough days when I was really struggling with things. You really know how to brighten my day. I hope you’re well and don’t let anyone get to you. You are perfect the way you are and you don’t need to change yourself. I really do hope I can meet you one day because that would just be a blessing but for now I can just hope for the best and hopefully you can go a long way and receive the love you deserve.
